The biggest difference that you will find when you drive your hire car in the USA is that the Americans drive on the right hand side of the road and that all the cars are left hand drive. This can be quite awkward at first - especially changing gear, so it is a good idea to hire a car with automatic gears and get used to the car before you set off.

Speed limits are well posted and rigorously enforced, in the city centre they are around 45 mph, and on interstate roads they vary between 55 and 75mph. You can receive an on the spot fine if you are caught speeding when you drive your cheap USA hire car.

Some important differences you should be aware of when driving in the USA are that you can turn right at traffic lights even if they show red. When approaching a junction on a motorway, do not start to slow down until you enter the clearly marked deceleration lane, and never undertake, as this is a serious offence.

Drink driving is not tolerated in the USA, and if you are caught over the limit (similar to the UK) you can expect a heavy fine, as well as a driving ban and possible prison term. You will also forfeit your insurance in an accident.
